THE EQUINOX tion of members of the Sanctuary of the Gnosis, the IX° of the O.T.O. 94. The more thou dost become at one with it, thy being melted in its BEING, the more thy Soul unites with that which IS, the more thou wilt become COMPASSION ABSOLUTE. This verse throws a little further light upon its predeces- sor. COMPASSION is really a certain Chinese figure whose names are numerous. One of them is BAPHOMET. 95. Such is the Arya Path, Path of the Buddhas of per- fection. This closes the subject. 96. Withal, what mean the sacred scrolls which make thee say: “Om! I believe it is not all the Arhats that get of the Nir- vanic Path the sweet fruition.” “Om! I believe that the Nirvana-Dharma is entered not by all the Buddhas.” Here, however, we come to the question of the final renun- ciation. It is undoubtedly true that one may push spiritual experience to the point of complete attainment without ever undertaking the work of a Dhamma-Buddha, though it seems hard to believe that at no period during that progress will it have become clear that the Complete Path is down- wards as well as upwards. 97. Yea; on the Arya Path thou art no more Srotapatti, thou art a Bodhisattva. The stream is cross’d. ’Tis true thou hast a right to Dharmakéya vesture; but Sambhoga- kaya is greater than a Nirvéni, and greater still is a Nir- manakéya—the Buddha of Compassion. 130
