…ugh the city wall, he came Out to the living flame Of lambent water and the carven quay, Stone, like embroidery ! All the dear beauty of art’s soul sublime He looked on the last time, And trod the figured steps, and found the ledge At the white water’s edge Where the king’s pinnace lodged ; but he put by That shell of ivory, And chose a pearl-inwoven canoe, whose prow Bore the moon’s own bright brow In grace of silver sculputred ; and therein He stepped ; and all the water thin Laughed to receive him ; now the city faded Little by little into m…

A feast every night unto Nu, and the pleasure of uttermost delight! 44. Aye! Feast! Rejoice! there.is no dread hereafter. There is the dissolution, and eternal ecstasy in the kisses of Nu. 45. There is death for the dogs. 46. Dost thou fail? Art thou sorry? Is fear in thine heart? 47. Where I am these are not. 48. Pity not the fallen! I never knew them. I am not for them. I c…

…n sum, Like Nature's self, abhor a vacuum! Oh, but there's mind! ‘There's folk that have a brain, ‘That need the food of spirit and of heart. There's folk that need love, pity, peace; disdain All that lacks beauty, passion, wit, and art. Yours is a mind that does not hesitate To find a word for such—" degenerate.” Xm It poisons me to think such thoughts: they mar ‘The crystal of my orgasm of hate. How can I fling from facets as they are ‘The unwavering light of it, the focussed fate? If I could only speak my thought, its curse Would char you, b…

…t herein by the Stirring of that deeper Nature within him. Thou wilt mark also that great Men are commonly great Lovers; and this is in Part also because (consciously or not) they are ware of that Secret following, that every Act of Love communicateth somewhat of the Wisdom stored within him to his percipient Mind. Yet must such Act be done rightly, according to Art; and unless such Act is of Profit alike to Mind and Body, it is an Error. This then is true Doctrine; which if it be understanded aright of thee, shall make diamond-clear thy Path i…

Its flower in its own perfumed passion, Its faint sweet passion, folded and furled In flower fashion ; And my deep spirit taking its pure part Of that voluptuous heart Of hidden happiness ! 2. The Mother’s Tragedy

THE FATAL FORCE 33 AMENHATEP. Beware the fatal magic of her heart! For she is great and evil, and her voice Howls blasphemy against yet living gods. Thou knowest not the story of thy birth, The truth. PACHAD Then speak the truth, if so a priest May tune his tongue to anything but lies. AMENHATEP. Sixteen strange seasons mingle gold and grey Since in this very temple she, the Queen, Spake, and threw open to our reverent gaze A ‘royal womb made pregnant with that seed Of which thou art the harvest. She spake thus: ‘Princes, and people of the Egyp…

The Soul of Osiris

…betrays their feet : Beauty, the sacred lotus : let me say The word, and make my purity complete. The whole is mine, and shall I keep a part ? O Beauty, I must see thee as thou art ! Then on my withered gaze that Beauty grew— Rosy quintessence of alchemic dew ! The Self-informing Beauty ! In my heart The many were united : and I knew. Smitten by Beauty down I fell as dead— So strikes the sunlight on a miner’s head. Blind, stricken, crushed ! That vast effulgence stole, Flooded the caverns of my secret soul, And gushed in waves of weeping. I was…

The Book of Thoth

… The symbolism of the dolphin is very complicated, and must be studied in books of reference; but the general idea is that of the “Royal Art”. The dolphin is peculiarly sacred to Alchemy. The number Two referring to Will, this card might really be renamed the Lord of Love under Will, for that is its full and true meaning. It shows the harmony of the male and the fe‐ male: interpreted in the largest sense. It is perfect and placid harmony, radiating an intensity of joy and ecstasy.

But thou, who art Light, and: above them, Who art fire and above them as fire, Shall thy sightless eyes not love them Who are all of thine own desire? …—the intense sublime Master of all philosophy and play, Lord of all love and music and sweet rhyme. Follow thou him! Work ever, if thy heart Be fervent with one hope, thy brain with art, | Thy lips with song, thine arm with strength to smite : Achieve some act; its name shall not depart. Christ laid Love’s corner-stone, and Cesar built The tower of glory; Sappho’s life was spilt _ From fervent lips the torch of song t’ ignite : Thou mayst add yet a stone—if but thou wilt. By whom, O love, my soul is subtly stricken? O Love, O Love, I linger On the dear word and know not any meaning, Nor why I chant; there is a whisper weaning My soul from depths I knew to depths I guess, Centred in two words only: ‘“‘ Love” and “ Yes.” What lyrist’s gentle finger Strikes out a note, a key, a chord unheard of? The Book of Thoth

VI. THE LOVERS [OR: THE BROTHERS] This card and its twin, XIV, Art, are the most obscure and difficult of the Atu. Each of these symbols is in itself double, so that the meanings form a divergent series, and the inte‐ gration of the Card can only be regained by repeated marriages, identifications, and some form of Hermaphroditism. Yet the attribution is the essence of simplicity. Atu VI refers to Gemini, ruled by Mer‐ cury. It means The Twins. The Hebrew letter corresponding is Zain, which means a Sword, and the framework of the card is therefo…

Art always has a suspicion to fight against ; always some poor mad Max Nordau is handy to call everything outside the kitchen the asy- lum. Here, however, there is a substratum of truth. Consider the intolerable long roll of names, all tainted with glorious madness.
